Sharjah Puppet Art Residency & Puppet Workshop! Celebrating the #Emirati identity, heritage & culture


MARAYA ART CENTRE AND HEART OF SHARJAH WELCOME JORDANIAN ENTERTAINER AND MASTER PUPPETEER MACADI NAHHAS FOR PUPPET ART RESIDENCY

PROLIFIC RECORDING ARTIST TO SHARE EXPERTISE IN FOLKLORE AND HERITAGE THROUGH THE ART OF PUPPETRY, JOINED BY REGIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL PUPPETEERS
REGISTRATION NOW OPEN FOR WORKSHOPS AND PERFORMANCES UNTIL 19 FEBRUARY

SHARJAH, UAE, 3 February 2016 | A songwriter and singer, Nahhas is recognized as a leading regional voice in Arabian folklore, and will also curate the music for the February closing performances, which will draw on the UAE’s tradition of singing, dancing, and storytelling. 

With all eight workshops and performances taking place at Heart of Sharjah, the grand finale on 19 February is the research result of Nahhas' residency, which is a component of the contemporary heritage programme sponsored jointly by Maraya Art Centre and Heart of Sharjah.  Macadi Nahhas’s puppetry workshops and performances are in collaboration with Maqam Productions.

Teens from 15+ are welcome to join workshops in the areas of shadow puppetry, mask creation, hand puppet development and the making of wonderboxes.  Interspersed with the workshops are performances for children of all ages, drawing on classic puppetry and heroic themes, including the use of clay figurines for the youngest audience members.

“The art of puppetry attracts enthusiasts from all ages and backgrounds, and Maraya Art Centre’s workshops and performances enable participants to engage in the creative process while learning about cultural traditions from the region and beyond,” said Giuseppe Moscatello, Director of Maraya Art Centre.  “Through our partnership with Heart of Sharjah, we are delighted to welcome some of the foremost talents in the puppeteering world to the UAE to explore our country’s heritage through this highly accessible art form.”

Joining Nahhas in Maraya Art Centre’s Puppet Art Residency are a number of experts in the field from the wider Middle East and Europe, who will work with participants from the ages of 6-15+ to exercise their own creativity in imagining and developing paper puppets.  Puppet masters leading the initiative include:

Husam Abed: a puppet master and an experienced children and youth worker who finished his Master of Directing for Alternative and Puppet Theatre at the prestigious Academy of Performing Arts (DAMU) in Czech Republic. He is a founder of Dafa puppet theatre in Jordan and Czech Republic, which serves as a platform for teaching the new techniques of puppet theatre and searching for the development of the puppet theatre scene in Arab world. 
Reka Deak: a Master of Directing in Contemporary Theatre from the Art University- Marosvásárhely – Romania. She studied stage design for Alternative and Puppet Theatre at the Academy of Performing Arts in Czech Republic. She is working as a puppeteer since 2006 at the Ariel- Children and Youth Theatre. Founder and CEO of Babu Association in Romania. 
Bruno Leone: a Master of Italian traditional hand puppet theatre, and founder of his own school in Naples. He is well known over all the world and has led many workshops at many performing arts schools and performed at international festivals.
Fairouze Nastas: a Master of scenography from the Higher Institution of Dramatic Arts in Damascus, as well as a freelancer for set and costume designer since 2008. Since 2002, she is working as stage designer at Al Harah Theatre in Beit Jala in Palestine.
Steve Tiplady and Sally Todd: co-founders of Indefinite Articles (since 1995), an open theatre project that transforms ordinary objects and materials into innovative shows for both children and adults. Sally Todd is a sculptor and a visual artista collaborating with educators to support and develop children’s creativity. Steve Tiplday has been using puppetry in his work, and is also an expert in shadow theatre.
