#AFAC Cultural Week in #NewYork - Uncover, Discover, Recover - Narratives from a Region in Transformation

As part of its commitment to support independent cultural production in the Arab region, promote cultural exchange and encourage patronage and philanthropy for arts and culture, the Arab Fund for Arts & Culture (AFAC) with the support of the Ford Foundation is proud to launch "AFAC Cultural Week in New York" from Sep 20-26th.

In the midst of the growing trend of extremism and a tendency for communities to become trapped in their own stories of threatened identity, AFAC grantees set out to uncover the social issues that underlie these trends, surface alternative solutions and re-engage their communities in imagining a shared and better future.

As part of the week, a series of AFAC-funded narrative films, documentaries and shorts will be screened at The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), the work of two leading photographers will be exhibited at Brooklyn’s Photoville festival, and AFAC grantees will present their projects at Aperture and Artists Space.

"As we grapple with narratives of intolerance, extremism and backwardness, these independent voices are the ones that are best positioned to portray the region’s complex realities and usher in a new era of openness. We aim to introduce such critical work to a wide audience that is hungry to see, understand and get engaged", said Dr. Ghassan Salamé, Chairman of AFAC.

Ford Foundation’s president Darren Walker will host a special Gala Dinner on Sep 23rd to celebrate the creative and courageous work coming out of the Arab region and the role AFAC is playing in developing a sustainable Arab philanthropy.

"The Ford Foundation believes that arts, culture and creativity are integral pieces in the campaign against global inequality and they are drivers and embodiments of inclusive development for all," said Darren Walker. "We are proud to have supported the Arab Fund for Arts and Culture AFAC since its inception in 2006 to engage at the forefront of courageous institutions that promote free expression, creativity and entrepreneurship in arts and culture. Their innovative collaborations with Arab Philanthropy and the corporate sector are great steps towards the sustainability of diversity and creativity for human development."

AFAC’s contribution to innovation and entrepreneurship received international recognition with the recent award to AFAC grantee -Ely Dagher- for his film Waves '98. It was the first ever Cannes Palm D'or awarded to an Arab short film.
